Fighting the Trade in Counterfeit Goods With Digital ID Adhesive Labels

Adhesive labels may become a trend in high fashion as a result of Ralph Lauren Corporation’s decision to use digital labels as guardians of garments’ authenticity. Starting with its new POLO range, the New York-based fashion company has included labels that have built-in garment IDs. The label can be scanned ,  and the authenticity of the garment verified, simply by using a smartphone.

The digital labels, produced in partnership with pressure sensitive adhesives manufacturer Avery Dennison, and digital company EVRYRHNG, were developed in response to the escalation in trading involving counterfeit products which bear the names of top brands. To protect both the buyers, and the company’s reputation, the new labels will include inlaid Digital Product Identities which will not only verify that the goods on offer as genuine or reveal them as being copies, but will also make available extra information which could be of interest to buyers, such as the details required to track the supply chain.
